The Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa lets international students who complete an eligible Australian qualification stay, live, and work in Australia without sponsorship. For most graduates, the 485 is the critical bridge from study to a permanent migration pathway such as a Subclass 189, 190 or employer-sponsored visa.

The Two Streams

Post-Higher Education Work Stream

For graduates of Bachelor, Masters, or Doctoral degrees. Duration: 2 years (Bachelor/Masters by coursework), 3 years (Masters by research), 4 years (PhD). Regional study extensions available.

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

For graduates of trade qualifications and certain Diploma courses. Duration: usually 18 months, with regional extensions possible. Occupation must be on the relevant list.

What to Do With Your 485

  • Target graduate programs — most big employers have structured grad intakes each year
  • Build Australian work experience: even junior roles help you qualify for PR later
  • Use the time to get points for skilled migration (age, experience, English)
  • Complete a skills assessment in your occupation as early as possible
  • Apply for 189/190 or look for 482/186 sponsors before your 485 expires
  • Consider regional employment for extra migration points and an extension

Common 485 Mistakes

The age cap dropped to 35 in recent reforms, which surprised many applicants. Lodge before your 35th birthday. Also: qualifications must be completed within the 6 months before lodgement, and the course must be at least 2 academic years of full-time study in Australia (not just 2 calendar years).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a job offer for the 485 visa?

No. The 485 is unsponsored — you apply based on your Australian qualification, not on employment. You can look for jobs after the visa is granted.

Can I leave Australia on a 485 visa?

Yes. The 485 is a multi-entry visa, so you can travel in and out while it is valid.

What happens when my 485 expires?

You need another visa to stay. Most graduates transition to 189, 190, 491, 482, 186, or a partner visa. Plan this transition 12+ months before expiry.

Does a 485 count for Australian work experience?

Yes — work experience on a 485 counts for points under the Skilled Migration program, provided it is in your nominated occupation.

Can I study on a 485 visa?

Yes, but it is primarily a work visa. If you plan to study full-time again, a student visa may be more appropriate.
